Pat Grant made a lot of noise about being afraid for his life, but he didn’t press charges. He told his family and friends that he intended to transfer to Appalachian State once the semester ended. The Chief forced me to swear on all things holy that I wouldn’t harass the kid, or be seen anywhere near him. I was still forbidden from campus. Red and I got restless sitting around doing nothing. Brody and Angelina had so far failed to come up with a plan to entrap Kate. I kept my mouth shut about the matter, having already screwed things up once.

I abandoned the fly rod I’d once given Pop Sutton. I drove all the way to Bristol to visit the Bass Pro Shops, where I purchased a fine St. Croix ultralight spinning rod. I paired it with a sweet little Shimano reel and loaded up on lures and goodies to harass trout with. I’d seen enough of the lakes and rivers in the area to begin my quest to catch some decent fish on light spinning tackle. I only had to learn the differing rules that governed each body of water. I almost needed a lawyer at my side to know what lures I could use, when I could fish, and if I could keep any fish or not.

To get the feel of things, I chose Wildcat Lake as my first destination. I’d been all around the edges of it stalking the stalker in a ghillie suit. I knew I could get away from the park area and still have access to cast for trout. I caught a few small ones that didn’t quite satisfy my thirst. I moved on to Beech Mountain over the next several days, trying the waters of Buckeye and Coffey lakes. It was nice to get out and not be working for someone. The fishing was mediocre, but it took my mind off things. That is until Pat Grant changed his mind. His parents found out about my assault and convinced him to have me arrested.

I can only imagine the conversations that went on as to who would come pick me up. The crime took place in Banner Elk, which is in Avery County. They could have sent Angelina to put me in cuffs, or the Chief could have done it himself. I didn’t live within the boundaries of either Avery County or Banner Elk, so they called on my old friend Rominger, with the Highway Patrol. He was friendly about it, aside from the lecture I received on the way to the courthouse in Newland. He didn’t make me wear cuffs for the ride, and I sat in the front seat with him. When we pulled into the parking lot, he apologized before making me wear the cuffs inside to be booked.

I had my mug shot and fingerprints taken, which I didn’t like too much, but there was nothing I could do about it. I was about to pop up on some government employees radar.
